The United States and its allies should reject calls for a global ban on AI-enabled autonomous weapons systems, according to an official report commissioned by the U.S. President and Congress.
The report said AI would “compress decision-making timeframes” and require military services to respond quickly that humans could not make alone.
And warned that Russia and China were unlikely to abide by such a treaty.
But critics claim the proposals risk sparking an “irresponsible” arms race.
“This is an alarming and frightening report that could lead to the proliferation of AI weapons that can decide who to kill,” said Professor Noel Sharkey, a spokesman for the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots.
